AIIMS Delhi Introduces Advanced Da Vinci Surgical Robot for Training

AIIMS Delhi has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Da Vinci Surgical Robot at its Skills, E-Learning and Telemedicine Facility (SET) on Thursday. The robot, provided by Intuitive Surgicals under a Memorandum of Understanding, marks a major step forward in robotic-assisted surgical training at AIIMS New Delhi.

With this installation, AIIMS becomes the only institution in the country to have two different surgical robots dedicated to training. The facility already housed a Hugo training robot, provided by Medtronics.

The SET facility is widely used by trainees and faculty from AIIMS as well as other institutions. It provides access to advanced training using manikins, simulators, and trainers, offering students, residents, nurses, healthcare professionals, and faculty the opportunity to learn and practice in a stress-free and supervised environment.

The addition of the Da Vinci robot expands these opportunities further, equipping surgeons and care teams with specialised skills and training in robotic-assisted surgeries across multiple specialities, including urology, gynaecology, surgical oncology, general surgery, and head and neck surgery.

This collaboration is expected to strengthen the adoption of robotic-assisted surgery in India by providing high-quality training in a government-run institution.

Speaking at the launch, Dr M Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, said, “With this training centre, AIIMS Delhi is reinforcing its leadership in advancing surgical education and innovation. The demand for precision-driven technologies, like robotic-assisted surgery, is growing in India. By equipping surgeons to perform surgeries on advanced robotic technologies, this centre will help improve surgical precision, reduce recovery times, and elevate patient care across the country.” He added that earlier, surgeons had to travel abroad and pay significant amounts for such training, which can now be accessed within the institution itself.

Mr Rohitt Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager of Intuitive India, expressed his commitment to supporting the full utilisation of the system.

Dr Amlesh Seth, Professor and Head of the Department of Urology at AIIMS Delhi, said, “Robotic surgery has transformed the way we perform surgeries by enhancing precision, control, and visibility. This training centre will allow experienced surgeons at AIIMS to mentor and guide the next generation of robotic surgeons, ensuring they are equipped with the right skills and confidence to advance surgical excellence across the country. This will also help residents gain early exposure to advanced minimally invasive techniques, practice in a safe and controlled environment, and build confidence before entering independent practice. This strengthens their foundation in precision surgery and enhances patient safety.”

This installation marks the first time Intuitive Surgical’s advanced Da Vinci system has been set up for training at a government medical college in India.
