India has taken a step forward in space medicine research as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Indian Space Research Organisation’s Human Space Flight Centre signed an agreement to collaborate on studying the effects of space on the human body.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi on Monday, creating a framework for joint research in space medicine. The collaboration aims to explore how the human body behaves in space and how those findings can contribute to improving healthcare on Earth.
Under the partnership, researchers will conduct ground-based and space-based studies across several key areas. These include human physiology, cardiovascular and autonomic regulation, musculoskeletal health in microgravity, microbiome and immunology, genomics and biomarkers, and behavioural health.
The collaboration is expected to support scientific understanding of how microgravity and space conditions affect the human body, which will be important for future human spaceflight missions.
AIIMS Director Prof M Srinivas said the partnership will help expand the scope of medical research in the country.
He noted that the collaboration between AIIMS and the Human Space Flight Centre would open new frontiers in medical research.
The initiative is also expected to contribute to the development of advanced medical knowledge and technologies that could benefit both astronauts and healthcare systems on Earth.
