AI4Bharat launches Indic LLM Arena to benchmark AI models for Indian languages

IIT Madras-backed AI research initiative AI4Bharat has launched the Indic LLM Arena, a crowd-sourced evaluation platform designed to set new standards for assessing global large language models built for Indian users. The platform addresses a major gap in English-centric global leaderboards by focusing on how effectively AI systems understand, respond, and adapt to India’s diverse languages and cultural contexts.

The Indic LLM Arena evaluates AI models across three key areas — language, context, and safety — ensuring that performance aligns with India’s linguistic and social diversity. It tests how well models handle code-mixed languages such as Hinglish and Tanglish, respond sensitively to local nuances, and follow India’s evolving ethical and social standards.

The platform operates through a human-in-the-loop system where users can type or speak prompts, compare responses from different models, and vote for the better output. These votes are then combined into statistically validated rankings that reflect real-world expectations and linguistic diversity.

AI4Bharat describes the Indic LLM Arena as a “public utility” for India’s AI ecosystem. It is open source, allowing developers, enterprises, and users to collaborate in shaping benchmarks for trustworthy and inclusive AI. This approach ensures that Indian perspectives directly influence the definition of what “good AI” means within the country’s multilingual and multicultural framework.

Supported by Google Cloud in its initial rollout, the Indic LLM Arena is already gaining strong interest across the AI community. Adithya S. K., AI researcher and founder of CognitiveLabs, praised the initiative, saying, “The UX is spot on and I had the best Kannada typing experience. These are the sort of efforts labs in India should be doing more across domains.”

By building a transparent, participatory benchmarking system, AI4Bharat’s Indic LLM Arena aims to shape the next generation of AI models that not only excel technically but also embody India’s linguistic depth, cultural identity, and ethical values. The initiative represents a major milestone in the journey towards a globally competitive yet locally rooted AI ecosystem that promotes inclusion and collaboration.
