AI, Technology and Innovation Key to India’s Growth Story: Piyush Goyal

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that Artificial Intelligence, technology, and innovation will be the driving forces of India’s growth in the coming decades.

Speaking at the 58th convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), Goyal congratulated the graduating class of 2025 and urged them to use their skills and vision to contribute towards the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.

The minister highlighted the transformative potential of emerging technologies such as AI, robotics, machine learning, quantum computing, and innovation across sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and education. He said that with 2.3 million STEM graduates every year, India has the capacity to reduce its dependence on foreign technology while uplifting industries and empowering communities at every level.

Sharing his own experience of running a skill development centre in Mumbai with industry partners, Goyal said students from modest backgrounds quickly embraced new technologies such as cybersecurity, reflecting India’s natural ability to adapt and innovate. He stressed that India’s youthful population, with an average age of 28.4 years, is its biggest strength in the journey from a $4 trillion economy to one worth $30–35 trillion.

He also cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of self-reliance in technology, from operating systems to cybersecurity and deep tech to artificial intelligence. Goyal said India must establish global leadership in technology and make the nation proud.

Outlining the government’s economic vision, the minister said it is focused on building a developed India rooted in resilience, sustainability, inclusiveness, and innovation-driven growth. The goal, he added, is to improve quality of life, bridge the rural and urban divide, reduce poverty, and enhance both ease of doing business and ease of living.

Emphasising India’s strong fundamentals, low inflation, and status as the fastest-growing large economy, Goyal said over 2,500 international companies have already invested in the country, placing immense opportunities in the hands of India’s youth.

Chancellor of IIFT and Secretary of the Department of Commerce, Sunil Barthwal, also addressed the gathering, noting that resilience, adaptability, and ethical leadership will be key to India’s global success. He urged students to align their ambitions with the nation’s goals, reminding them that each step they take in their careers contributes to the country’s progress.
