AI talent demand surges as job postings rise 11.7 per cent

Demand for AI skills in India continues to grow, with job postings explicitly mentioning artificial intelligence rising to 11.7 per cent in September, up from 8.2 per cent a year ago, according to a report released on Wednesday. This marks a steady increase from 10.6 per cent three months earlier.

“India ranks highly against other markets. Apart from India, only Singapore has a higher share of postings mentioning artificial intelligence. It’s clear that many employers across India have gone all-in on artificial intelligence,” said Callam Pickering, APAC Senior Economist at a global hiring platform.

The report, based on real-time job posting data, shows AI-related roles are concentrated in the tech sector but are spreading across various industries. Nearly 39 per cent of data and analytics roles now require AI skills, followed by software development at 23 per cent, insurance at 18 per cent, and scientific research at 17 per cent.

AI demand is also strong across engineering fields, with industrial engineering leading at 17 per cent, mechanical engineering at 11 per cent, and electrical engineering at 9.2 per cent.

Despite the surge in AI-focused roles, overall job postings in India fell by 0.8 per cent in September, marking the sixth consecutive month of decline this year. The report highlights that the Indian workforce is gradually moving towards more formal work arrangements, which has kept job postings stronger than in many other markets.

“India’s formal sector continues to perform strongly, with more than enough jobs available to support the ongoing economic transition. As AI reshapes hiring priorities, the demand for specialised, high-skilled professionals has intensified. Many employers are seeking candidates proficient in AI-related tools, such as data analytics and automation, skills that are not yet widely represented in the current talent pool,” the report added.

The findings indicate a clear trend: while overall hiring may be slowing, companies are increasingly investing in AI talent to drive innovation and automation across industries.
