AI start-up Perplexity is building an agentic browser that could possibly disrupt Google’s search dominance

AI startup An agentic browser being developed by Perplexity has the potential to challenge Google’s hegemony in search. CEO Aravind Srinivas did not disclose any specific information about the browser other than referring to it as Comet.

In a LinkedIn post, Mr. Srinivas invited users to sign up for the waitlist, noting, “This is a pretty serious engineering undertaking. Please join us to help build the future of Internet browsing with AIs doing deep research and tasks for us!”

There is currently little information available on how the browser will function and conduct web searches. The startup’s chatbot functions somewhat like a browser that does web searches for information. However, it uses a chat interface to deliver this service.

The market for browsers is dominated by Google, and even large IT companies have made unsuccessful attempts to capture a sizable portion of the market. With its Bing browser, Microsoft tried to regain some market share, but it hasn’t even come close to reducing Google’s position.

It will be intriguing to see how Perplexity’s Comet may compete with Google’s Chrome browser and perhaps change the SEO/SEM landscape. The startup may be the catalyst for a change in the dynamics of the browser market if it has early success with broader adoption.
