AI Robot Goes Rogue Charges at Crowd at Chinese Festival

A startling event at the Spring Festival Gala in Tianjin, China, has raised new alarms about AI safety after a humanoid robot unexpectedly charged at a bewildered audience.

On February 9, video footage captured the robot, clad in a colorful jacket, suddenly lunging toward spectators behind a barrier. Security staff promptly intervened, managing to restrain the malfunctioning robot before it could inflict any damage.

Event organizers have since minimized the seriousness of the incident, labeling it a “robotic failure.” They reassured the public that the robot had passed all safety evaluations before the event and highlighted that measures have been implemented to prevent similar occurrences, as reported by Metro.

Public Reaction is Alarmed

The unsettling video has sparked a flurry of responses online, with many voicing concerns about the future of AI-driven robotics.

“So it begins… an AI-controlled robot attacked a human,” one commenter noted.

Another added humorously, “Just a little preview of our bright future.”

A third user stated, “Can we please fix ALL the glitches before unleashing them on the public?”

A fourth posed a critical question: “Should we be worried that AI and robots can turn against humans due to malfunctions?”

As AI technologies become more embedded in everyday life, discussions about their safety and ethical considerations are intensifying. Is this merely a minor glitch, or does it hint at a more troubling future?
