In a significant development in the AI industry, Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI are reportedly working together to address concerns around the copying of advanced AI models by competitors. The collaboration aims to protect proprietary technologies and maintain fair competition.
According to a report, the companies have agreed to share information to detect and prevent model distillation attempts by Chinese AI firms. This effort is being coordinated through the Frontier Model Forum, a nonprofit established in 2023 with support from these companies and Microsoft to promote safe and responsible AI development.
Model distillation is a technique where a smaller model is trained to replicate the behaviour of a larger model. While it is commonly used in authorised settings to build efficient systems, the concern raised by these firms is that some developers may be misusing their AI services. By generating large volumes of outputs, they can train competing models that offer similar performance at lower costs.
In 2025, OpenAI had earlier accused DeepSeek of using this method to develop its DeepSeek-R1 model. Such practices are said to impact revenues significantly, with claims that imitation models could cost US-based AI firms billions of dollars annually. However, these claims have not been independently verified.
The companies have also reportedly described such activities as a potential national security risk, highlighting the growing strategic importance of advanced AI technologies.
This collaboration reflects increasing efforts by leading AI developers to safeguard their innovations while addressing emerging challenges in a rapidly evolving global AI landscape.
