AI-driven shift prompts leadership exits at Coca-Cola and Walmart

As artificial intelligence reshapes industries, its influence is now extending to leadership decisions at the highest level. CEOs of two of the world’s largest companies—The Coca-Cola Company and Walmart—have linked their decision to step down to the growing impact of AI on business transformation.

Speaking in separate interviews with CNBC, both leaders highlighted how the next phase of growth will require a different leadership approach shaped by AI-driven change.

James Quincey said his decision was influenced by the evolving business environment and the role AI will play going forward. “My job is also to think who’s the best team to put on the field to get the next wave done,” he said. “And I concluded that, actually, it was time to put someone else on the field for the next wave of growth.”

Quincey, who has led Coca-Cola since 2017, will be succeeded by current COO Henrique Braun. He noted that while the company made strong progress in a “pre-AI” phase, a major shift is now underway. “In a pre-AI, a pre-gen-AI mode, we made a lot of progress. But now there’s a huge new shift coming along,” he added.

Similarly, Doug McMillon pointed to AI as a key factor in his decision to step down. He said the scale of upcoming transformation made it difficult for him to see the full cycle through. “With what’s happening with AI, I could start this next big set of transformations with AI, but I couldn’t finish,” he said.

McMillon further explained that emerging trends like agentic commerce and AI-driven shopping influenced his thinking. “About a year ago, I really started feeling like this next run, you could see what agentic commerce was going to look like, the vision for AI shopping, and I started thinking about everything that needs to happen over the next few years, and it really caused me to think that now was the right time [to step down],” he said.

These developments highlight how AI is not only transforming operations and customer experiences but also shaping long-term leadership strategies at global enterprises.
