A 34-year-old businessman from Thaltej, Ahmedabad, was duped of Rs 1.42 crore in a cyber scam that began through a matrimonial app. The victim, Gurpreetsingh Sasan, had registered on the platform and was contacted by a woman identifying herself as Gurleen Kaur Agarwal, reportedly a resident of the NCR.
According to the FIR filed with the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell, the two developed a close virtual connection over time. Gaining his trust, the woman convinced Sasan to invest in USDT (Tether), a cryptocurrency, and shared a link to a platform for making the investments.
Initially, Sasan was allowed to withdraw small amounts of money, which gave him confidence in the scheme. Encouraged by these early returns, he began investing larger sums in phases. However, when he attempted to withdraw a substantial part of his investment, he was told that he would need to pay heavy taxes in order to process the withdrawal.
Realising he might have been cheated, Sasan approached the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell and registered a formal complaint on Sunday.
The Ahmedabad authorities are now investigating the case. This incident highlights the growing threat of cyber frauds operating through social and matrimonial platforms, often using emotional manipulation to lure victims into fake investment schemes.
