Adobe enhances Firefly with advanced text based video editing and expanded AI model support

Creative workflows are set to become more flexible as Adobe rolls out a major update to Firefly, its AI powered video generation app, shifting the focus from simple creation to detailed video editing.

The software company has introduced prompt driven video editing tools that allow users to modify existing AI generated videos using text instructions. Earlier, even small changes required recreating an entire clip. With this update, creators can now fine tune colours, lighting, camera angles and composition without starting over.

Firefly also adds a new timeline view, giving users greater control over frames, audio and visual details. Adobe first showcased this editor in a private beta in October, and it is now being made available to all users.

According to Adobe, the editor works with high precision when paired with Runway’s Aleph model. Users can type specific commands such as changing the sky to an overcast look, lowering contrast or zooming slightly on a subject, and the edits are applied directly to the video.

Adobe’s own Firefly Video model is also getting new features. Users can upload a starting frame and a reference video to demonstrate a camera movement, then ask Firefly to recreate that motion in their own clip. This helps maintain visual consistency and makes it easier to replicate complex camera work.

The update also expands Firefly’s support for third party models. Integration with Topaz Labs’ Astra model allows videos to be upscaled to 1080p or 4K. Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.2 image generation model is also being added, with Adobe stating that FLUX.2 will soon be available across Firefly platforms, including Adobe Express from January.

As competition in AI video and image generation grows, Adobe is encouraging adoption by offering unlimited generations from all image models and the Adobe Firefly Video model within the Firefly app. This benefit applies to users on Firefly Pro, Firefly Premium and higher credit plans until January 15.

With prompt based editing, a broader model ecosystem and ongoing platform expansion, Adobe is positioning Firefly as a full scale creative platform rather than just an AI generation tool.
