The robotics and industrial automation market in India is valued at around $2 Bn and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 15% to 16% over the next decade. This growth is supported by initiatives such as Make in India and PLI schemes, along with rising adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies. Companies including Addverb, GreyOrange, Unbox Robotics, CynLr and Sastra are helping both new and legacy factories adopt robotics to address labour shortages, productivity pressure and skill gaps.
Addverb’s newly launched humanoid robot is 6 ft tall, weighs 80 kg and can carry a 15 kg payload. The first version comes with wheels for legs, while a biped version is planned later. The robot is designed for unstructured environments like factories and warehouses where traditional automation struggles. It joins Addverb’s existing portfolio that includes quadruped robot dogs capable of carrying 5 kg to 30 kg payloads across uneven and mountainous terrain, earning the name Digital Mule. The company plans to produce around 100 humanoid units over the next year and collaborate with 5 to 6 selected customers for product refinement.
Founded in 2016, Addverb began with grid based and natural navigation robots for warehouses before expanding into cobots, quadrupeds and now humanoids. CEO Sangeet Kumar said, “Each form factor brought us closer to understanding the complexities of real world robotics. Mobile robots taught us navigation, cobots taught us manipulation, quadrupeds taught us stability and terrain adaptability. Humanoids are the natural next step that combines all these elements into a single, general purpose machine.” Around 80% of the humanoid is built in house at its Noida facility. Backed by Reliance, which holds a 54% stake, Addverb aims to deploy the robot in solar, battery, electronics, nuclear and chemical sectors. Kumar added, “This is what we call physical AI or embodied AI. It is the toughest form of artificial intelligence because data is scarce, environments are unpredictable, and errors have real world consequences. It bridges the gap between digital intelligence and physical work.”
