Adani Group begins work on 570 MW Wangchhu hydropower project in Bhutan

A major step has been taken to deepen energy cooperation between India and Bhutan.

Adani Group has officially commenced construction of the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydro Electricity Project in Bhutan. The foundation stone was laid in the presence of Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani. The project was first announced in early September 2025.

Under the project structure, Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation will hold a 51 percent stake, while Adani Group will own the remaining 49 percent. The Wangchhu project marks the first hydropower initiative to be executed under a broader partnership agreed in May 2025, when both sides signed MoUs to jointly develop 5000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan.

“In a significant step for our energy partnership, we advanced key milestones by signing an MoU for 5000 MW of hydropower and officially commencing the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydro Electricity Project. I am sincerely grateful for the presence of Hon’ble Prime Minister Dasho @tsheringtobgay at the ceremony to mark this occasion,” Gautam Adani posted on X. He added, “We will continue to strengthen this partnership rooted in sustainability, trust and long term value.”

The Wangchhu project will require an investment of about Rs 60000000000 and is expected to be completed within 5 years from the start of construction. The project includes the development of renewable power generation facilities along with related infrastructure.

Gautam Adani also highlighted his association with the Gelephu Mindfulness City initiative. “Indeed, a visionary initiative of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck that reflects Bhutan’s enduring commitment to mindful and sustainable development,” he posted.

Once completed, the Wangchhu project is expected to strengthen Bhutan’s renewable energy capacity and reinforce long term regional energy cooperation.
