The decision was approved by the company’s board during its meeting on March 30, 2026. Gupta will take charge from April 1, 2026, signalling the start of a new leadership phase for the pharmaceutical company.
Achin Gupta, who is currently serving as Global Chief Operating Officer, has played a key role in driving the company’s operations. Since taking on the COO role in February 2025, he has managed critical areas such as commercial markets, active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), manufacturing, and supply chain.
He joined Cipla in 2021 as Chief Executive Officer of the One India business and has contributed to growth and profitability. Under his leadership, the India business expanded in chronic therapies and underserved segments, strengthened retail capabilities, and entered global partnerships.
With over 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, Gupta brings strong operational and strategic expertise. He holds an MTech in biochemical engineering and biotechnology from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
As part of the management reshuffle, Saurabh Gambhir and Satyavan Manikani have been named as Senior Management Personnel, effective from the same date.
Umang Vohra will step down as Managing Director and CEO on March 31, 2026, and will cease to be a director from April 1, ending a leadership tenure that began in September 2016.
During his tenure, Vohra led a phase of strategic and operational transformation at Cipla. The company strengthened its India business, expanded its presence in the United States, and improved profitability and operational efficiency. It also enhanced its respiratory portfolio, advanced work in antimicrobial resistance, and invested in digital and manufacturing capabilities.
Vohra, who joined Cipla in 2015 as Global Chief Financial and Strategy Officer before becoming CEO in 2016, leaves behind a legacy of business repositioning and global expansion.
This transition reflects continuity for Cipla, with an internal leader stepping up to guide the company through its next phase of growth in a competitive global pharmaceutical landscape.
