Delhi chartered accountant loses Rs 75,694 after installing fake bank app via WhatsApp

A cyber fraud case in Delhi has highlighted the risks of downloading unknown files shared through messaging apps. A chartered accountant lost Rs 75,694 within minutes after installing a malicious file sent on WhatsApp under the pretext of increasing her credit card limit.

According to investigators, fraudsters posed as bank officials and contacted the victim with an offer to “update” or “increase the limit” of her Kotak Mahindra Bank credit card. They sent her a fake mobile application in the form of an APK file, claiming it was required for the upgrade.

Once the file was installed, the attackers gained full access to her phone and credit card details. They quickly made online purchases worth Rs 75,694 using her credit card. Items were ordered through apps such as Zepto and delivered to Faridabad. The goods were later resold on platforms like OLX.

Police investigations revealed that the gang members had earlier worked with a credit card company, which gave them access to customer data. They misused this information to target victims. Using fake SIM cards, they contacted customers and convinced them to download the malicious APK.

After an FIR was registered on February 4, the cyber police launched a special operation. Through technical analysis and location tracking, authorities traced the delivery address to Lakkarpur village in Surajkund, Faridabad.

Four individuals were arrested: Abhishek Kumar Jha (24), Ashish Kumar Ojha (23), Vivek Kumar alias Monu (37), and Ikraar (23). Police recovered 4 mobile phones from them. All have been arrested or bound down, and further investigation is ongoing.

Cyber experts advise users not to download APK files from unknown numbers and never to share OTPs or card details. Banks do not send links or apps through WhatsApp. In case of suspicious calls, customers should contact the bank’s official helpline immediately.
