Elon Musk’s X begins rolling out XChat, its new privacy focused messaging service

Elon Musk’s X has started rolling out XChat, its new privacy focused messaging service that aims to compete with major messaging apps. The service is now available on iOS and the web, and will be introduced on Android soon. The company said that XChat is designed to offer better communication controls and stronger security for users. “XChat rolling out now on iOS and Web, Android coming soon. update your X app to access Chat and your legacy DMs in one unified inbox,” the company wrote in a post on X.

Elon Musk first announced the app in June. He said it was created in response to user demand for secure and versatile private messaging options within the platform. “All new XChat is rolling out with encryption, vanishing messages and the ability to send any kind of file. Also, audio or video calling. This is built on Rust with Bitcoin style encryption, whole new architecture,” Musk wrote on X.

XChat is built on Rust, a programming language known for both speed and security. It uses encryption methods similar to the protocol used for Bitcoin to strengthen user privacy and keep data protected. The app is designed to stand out from other messaging platforms by combining security features with cross platform communication tools.

Key features of the XChat app include end to end encryption for secure conversations, vanishing messages that disappear after a set time, the ability to share any type of file, and audio and video calling that works across platforms without needing a phone number.

XChat is available to all users on X, but certain features will only be available to premium subscribers. Elon Musk has hinted that premium benefits will include expanded storage, priority support and early access to experimental tools.

Musk has often spoken about his plan to turn X into a multi functional platform that brings together messaging, payments and other services similar to the model of a major Chinese super app. The launch of XChat and its advanced privacy and communication tools supports this wider vision.
