Google outlines new AI mode and Gemini shopping features ahead of holiday season

Google has introduced a wide range of artificial intelligence updates designed to make both online and in store shopping easier ahead of the holiday season. The company announced new tools across Search, the Gemini app and automated agentic systems that can compare products, call stores and even help complete purchases.

Google’s AI Mode in Search now supports conversational shopping. Users can describe what they want in simple language and receive an organised response that includes visuals, prices, reviews and stock information. People searching for ideas will see image based inspiration, while those comparing specific products will receive a clear table showing details such as texture, finish and reviewer comments. Google says these results come from its Shopping Graph, which tracks more than fifty billion product listings and updates millions of entries every hour.

Shopping support is also expanding inside the Gemini app in the United States. Users can look for gift ideas, build lists or compare items without moving between different tabs. The app displays shoppable product cards, price comparisons and retailer links directly in the chat window.

For those trying to find items locally, Google is rolling out a feature that can call nearby stores. When shoppers search for products near them, they may see an option allowing Google to check stock and pricing. The system uses Duplex technology with support from larger Gemini models to select which stores to contact, craft appropriate questions and summarise replies. Results are sent by email or text, along with related store inventory details from the Shopping Graph. This feature is beginning to roll out in the United States for categories such as electronics, toys and beauty items.

Google is also adding an automated checkout option linked to its price tracking tool. After users select the exact product, colour, size and spending limit, they receive an alert when the price meets their budget. For select merchants, Google can then complete the purchase using Google Pay, but only after the user confirms the order. The feature is appearing in Search, including AI Mode, for retailers in the United States such as Wayfair, Chewy, Quince and participating Shopify stores.

Google says the new tools aim to reduce the repetitive work often associated with holiday shopping. The updates are rolling out gradually in the United States, with more markets expected in the future.
