TRAI prepares to introduce verified caller name display for all users

A new change is coming to mobile calls in India that aims to reduce spam and fraud. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is set to roll out a feature called Calling Name Presentation. This system will allow phones to show the real and verified name of the person calling, using information collected during SIM registration. This means users will not need third party apps to identify callers name .

The idea is simple. When someone makes a call, the telecom operator will check its verified name database and display the registered name on the phone receiving the call. The feature will work on both smartphones and basic phones and will not require internet access. The intention is to help people recognise who is calling and decide whether to answer or decline the call immediately.

The authority has confirmed that the feature will be turned on automatically for all users once it is launched. However, subscribers who do not wish to use it will have the option to opt out by contacting their telecom service provider. This is meant to balance user safety with personal choice.

Telecom companies are currently upgrading their systems after successful trial runs on 4G and 5G networks in select cities. The trials showed that the feature works effectively for data based and VoIP calls. However, some updates are still needed for traditional voice calls before nationwide deployment.

Once fully implemented, this system is expected to become one of the largest verified caller identification networks in the world. It is seen as an important step in addressing rising spam, scam and unwanted calls that affect millions of users daily.

The Department of Telecommunications has already reviewed the trial results. After the remaining technical adjustments are completed, the feature will be introduced as an optional service. With fraudulent calls becoming more frequent, many believe this official caller identification system could provide more transparent and safer communication for users across the country.
