Adani Group shows interest in major development works at Vadhavan Port

The Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone has shown intent to take part in large scale development works at the upcoming Vadhavan Port project located near the financial capital. The company has signed two memoranda of understanding with the government owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority which holds the majority stake in the project situated in the Arabian Sea near the Palghar district.

The first agreement signed by the Chief Executive and Whole Time Director of APSEZ Ashwani Gupta records the group’s interest in offshore infrastructure works worth Rs 26500 crore. These works are expected to include key marine structures at the port. The second agreement reflects the Adani Group’s intent to participate in the construction of one of the planned container terminals at the port which is also valued at Rs 26500 crore.

According to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority Chairman Unmesh Wagh the Vadhavan Port is expected to be among the top ten largest ports in the world from the day it starts operations. The port will have nine container terminals and the Adani Group has expressed interest in undertaking one of these. He also stated that there will be extensive offshore development such as the building of a breakwater where the group has also shown willingness to participate.

Wagh clarified that the signed agreements do not guarantee any project allocation. They only indicate interest from the Adani Group. Detailed competitive bidding will be carried out for each development segment and APSEZ will be required to submit proposals as part of the formal evaluation process.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority holds a 76 percent share in the Vadhavan Port project while the remaining stake is with the Maharashtra Maritime Board. Currently Jawaharlal Nehru Port is the largest container port in the country handling 7.3 million TEUs in the financial year 2025. The MoUs at Vadhavan come shortly after APSEZ announced plans to invest Rs 42500 crore for the expansion of Dighi Port in Maharashtra.
