Uttar Pradesh approves resettlement plan for families affected by Noida International Airport expansion

The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the Rehabilitation and Resettlement plan for Phases 3 and 4 of the Noida International Airport located in Jewar which is set to become one of Asia’s largest airports. The plan will allow the acquisition of 1857 hectares across 14 villages and will directly affect nearly 16000 families. The number of affected families was revised to 15920 after authorities considered public feedback on the draft scheme.

Under the approved plan families will be shifted only after they are allotted residential plots and housing construction is completed. Landowners will receive compensation of Rs 4300 per square meter which is a 40 percent increase from earlier rates. For the resettlement process 438 hectares have been identified across the villages of Mangroli Neemka Shahjahanpur Alavalpur Sadullapur Ahmadpur Chauroli and Jewar Banger. The plan will begin with social impact assessments followed by official public notifications. Authorities estimate that the complete rehabilitation will take about two years.

The Noida International Airport is projected to become one of India’s largest aviation hubs. During a recent inspection the Chief Minister reviewed progress on the domestic terminal security systems traffic planning, runway testing and other technical preparations. While an earlier inauguration date was announced for October 30 the launch is now expected by mid December. Preparations for the opening are expected to be completed by November 15.

Once fully operational the airport will span 11750 acres including five runways and handle up to 300 million passengers every year. In the first phase the airport will manage 12 million passengers with about 150 daily flights. So far 6700 acres have been acquired and another 5100 acres will be acquired for upcoming phases. The land acquisition cost is estimated at Rs 5000 crore and construction costs around Rs 7000 crore. The project plan is also expected to ease congestion at Delhi’s main airport and improve air connectivity in northern India.

The airport will begin operations with domestic flights connecting ten major cities. IndiGo and Akasa Air have signed agreements to use Noida International Airport as an operational base and cargo services will start from the first day which will help farmers in nearby regions export agricultural goods more efficiently.
