Samanvaya platform drives 12,987 arrests and maps over 1.52 lakh cybercrime linkages across India

The Samanvaya platform, a joint cybercrime investigation facilitation system under the Union Home Ministry, has significantly strengthened India’s fight against cybercrime. Since its launch in September 2024, the platform has helped map criminal networks and trace digital footprints across states, leading to 12,987 arrests and identifying over 1.52 lakh criminal linkages. Government records show that Samanvaya has handled 70,584 cyber investigation assistance requests to date.

Developed as one of the verticals of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), Samanvaya enables inter-state and Union Territory coordination by using analytics to connect criminals, crimes, and patterns across jurisdictions.

India’s rapid digital expansion has also brought rising cybersecurity concerns. With over 86% of households now connected to the Internet, reported cyber incidents more than doubled from 10.29 lakh in 2022 to 22.68 lakh in 2024. Critical sectors such as infrastructure, finance, healthcare, and telecommunications have been identified as the most vulnerable.

The Enforcement Directorate has flagged major cyber frauds such as Pig Butchering (fake relationships or job scams), Phantom Hacking (fraudsters posing as officials), online betting and gambling platforms, and instant loan apps. Fraudsters are increasingly using spoofing, phishing, and AI-generated deepfakes to target victims.

To combat these threats, the Department of Telecommunications has introduced a Financial Fraud Risk Indicator to classify suspicious phone numbers by risk levels. So far, authorities have blocked over 9.42 lakh SIM cards and 2.63 lakh IMEI numbers linked to cybercrimes.

Over 1.06 lakh police officers have been trained through the CyTrain portal, with 82,704 certificates issued for cybercrime investigation skills. The Information Technology Act and Digital Personal Data Protection Act are being enforced to enhance legal action.

The government has also passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill in August 2025, banning online betting activities. Under the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS), financial institutions have prevented losses of over ₹5,489 crore across 17.82 lakh complaints.

Meanwhile, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre continue to monitor and safeguard critical systems across key sectors.

At the 9th India Mobile Congress (October 8–11), inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cybersecurity was highlighted as one of the core focus areas, showcasing India’s growing commitment to protecting its digital future.
