OpenAI Unveils Sora 2 Video AI and Exclusive TikTok-Like App

OpenAI has introduced its new Sora 2 video generation model, bringing enhanced capabilities nearly a year after the original Sora release. The AI model is accessible for free through a new iOS-only social media app, which follows a TikTok-style interface and is currently invite-only. The app allows users to create AI-generated videos of themselves and share them with friends. It also includes a “Cameo” feature that lets users generate videos of others.

In a blog post, OpenAI described Sora 2 as the “GPT‑3.5 moment for video,” highlighting its improvements in native audio generation and realistic physics in complex movements. Demonstrations showed a gymnast performing flips on a balance beam with lifelike motion. OpenAI noted that the model avoids morphing objects or deforming reality, reducing errors in video outputs.

The model also offers improved controllability, maintaining consistent world states across multiple shots. Sora 2 is said to perform best in realistic, cinematic, and anime styles. Users can upload a video of themselves, and the AI places the character in new settings while preserving high character consistency. Videos can be posted for followers to like, comment, and share. The Cameo feature allows users to select a character from another video and generate a new video using a text prompt.

OpenAI explained that users must verify their identity before generating videos of themselves, preventing misuse of celebrity content. However, the Cameo feature reduces some safeguards by enabling the creation of videos of others.

Sora 2’s app is currently available to users in the US and Canada. Once invited, users can also generate videos on the Sora website. OpenAI’s move follows similar initiatives in the AI video space, including Meta’s recent Vibe feed, which offers short AI-generated videos on the Meta AI app.

The launch of Sora 2 and its social app represents OpenAI’s push into AI-driven video content, enabling new forms of creative communication beyond traditional text, emojis, and voice messages.
