Zhipu AI CEO Says Superintelligent AI by 2030 May Surpass Humans in Some Areas

Artificial superintelligence could emerge by 2030, but its capabilities are expected to surpass humans only in certain areas, according to Zhang Peng, CEO of Chinese AI startup Zhipu AI. His comments come amid growing debate over when AI might overtake human intelligence, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicting ASI by the end of the decade and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son suggesting it could arrive by 2035.

“People reach different conclusions when discussing this issue,” Zhang said as Zhipu AI released its latest large language model, GLM-4.6. “Achieving or exceeding human intelligence levels by 2030 might mean surpassing humans in one or several aspects, but likely still falling far short in many areas.”

Founded in 2019 as a Tsinghua University spinoff, Zhipu AI has become a leading player in China’s AI sector. The company filed documents earlier this year indicating plans to list on Chinese markets. In June, OpenAI named Zhipu AI as a fast-rising competitor and highlighted its role in China’s efforts to promote AI globally. Zhang said the recognition was flattering but described the company’s international expansion as routine business.

Zhipu AI has begun gaining overseas revenue but is not yet competing with U.S. AI models in consumer subscriptions. However, the company is targeting enterprise clients and recently launched a coding subscription plan for developers to expand direct-to-consumer offerings. Zhang noted that while Chinese consumers have been slow to pay for AI services, this could change as AI becomes more accepted and affordable.

GLM-4.6, an upgrade over GLM-4.5 released in July, offers improved capabilities in coding, reasoning, writing, and agent applications, reinforcing Zhipu AI’s focus on enterprise and developer solutions.
