GitLab has released version 18.4, introducing advanced AI features to help developers work more efficiently. The update allows teams to build custom AI agents, explore codebases with the Knowledge Graph, and automatically fix pipelines, keeping developers focused on their work.
The new GitLab Duo AI Catalog acts as a central library of specialized agents. Teams can create and share custom agents tailored to their workflow. For instance, a Product Planning agent can file bugs according to company standards, a Technical Writer agent can draft consistent documentation, and a Security agent ensures compliance across all merge requests. These agents work directly in the GitLab environment, accelerating tasks without disrupting existing processes. Currently, the AI Catalog is available on GitLab.com, with self-managed support planned for version 18.5.
GitLab Duo Agentic Chat improves collaboration with AI agents. Developers can start new sessions or continue existing ones while maintaining context. Version 18.4 also allows users to select AI models at the individual level, providing flexibility to choose the best model for each task. The chat interface has been redesigned for better usability, and sessions now include rich details such as job logs, user information, and tool metadata.
A major highlight of this release is the GitLab Knowledge Graph. This feature creates a connected map of the entire codebase, linking files, routes, and references. It helps developers understand code dependencies, assess the impact of changes, and onboard new contributors faster. By giving both humans and AI agents more context, teams can work more confidently and accurately. Future updates will integrate additional GitLab data, including plans, merge requests, and security information, into the Knowledge Graph.
GitLab 18.4 also focuses on security and governance for AI usage. The platform ensures that AI-driven development remains compliant and safe while enhancing productivity. This release represents a significant step toward AI-native software development, combining automation, insight, and collaboration in one platform.
