OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is preparing for big changes in how it makes money. At present, the company earns mainly from ChatGPT Plus, the subscription service, but reports suggest that new sources of income are being explored. One of the main options being discussed is introducing advertisements inside ChatGPT.
To lead this effort, OpenAI has begun the search for a senior executive who will oversee all monetisation strategies. This role will focus on finding ways for the company to generate income beyond subscriptions. Advertisements are being considered, along with the possibility of new subscription models where some users may see ads while others could pay extra to remove them.
The initiative is being directed by Fidji Simo, the new Chief Executive Officer of Applications at OpenAI. Simo has significant experience in this field, having previously worked at Facebook where advertising was the main source of revenue. Reports say she has already started speaking with candidates for the position and may even be reaching out to some of her former colleagues to join the company.
The news has sparked debate among ChatGPT users. Some are concerned that ads could make conversations slower, distracting, or less private. Others think OpenAI may follow a model similar to YouTube, offering a free version with ads and a paid option without them.
The push for new revenue streams highlights the challenge OpenAI faces. Running advanced AI models such as ChatGPT requires powerful servers, large amounts of electricity, and heavy infrastructure, which makes the operation very costly. Relying only on subscriptions may not be enough to cover these expenses as the user base continues to grow.
For now, OpenAI has not confirmed exactly how ads might appear or whether users will certainly see them. What is clear is that the company is preparing for a shift in how it balances accessibility with sustainability. Much will depend on who is chosen to lead monetisation and how their decisions shape the future experience of millions of ChatGPT users worldwide.
