Meta’s Llama AI approved for use by US government agencies

U.S. government agencies will now be able to use Meta Platforms’ artificial intelligence system Llama, a senior administration official confirmed, as the government moves to adopt commercial AI tools in federal operations.

The General Services Administration, which handles government procurement, will add Llama to its list of approved AI tools for federal agencies, said Josh Gruenbaum, the GSA’s procurement lead. This approval allows agencies to experiment with Llama, a free tool, with assurance that it meets federal security and legal standards.

Llama is a large language model capable of processing multiple types of data, including text, video, images, and audio. Federal agencies may deploy it to speed up contract reviews, address IT challenges, and support other administrative tasks.

In recent months, the GSA has also approved AI tools from competitors of Meta, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI. These companies agreed to offer their paid products at discounted rates while meeting government security requirements.

When asked whether tech companies were offering discounts to gain approval from the administration, Gruenbaum said, “It’s not about currying favor. It’s about that recognition of how do we all lock in arms and make this country the best country it could possibly be.”

This move signals a growing push to integrate commercial AI technologies into government functions, enhancing efficiency and operational capabilities across federal agencies.
