Google May Bring Live Video Sharing With Emergency Services to Android Phones

Google could soon follow Apple’s lead by introducing live video sharing with emergency services on Android devices.

Smartphones have become crucial tools during emergencies, allowing users to alert both emergency services and loved ones. Over the years, Google has added features like Car Crash Detection, Safety Check, and Crisis Alerts to its Pixel phones. Now, it appears that a feature similar to Apple’s Emergency SOS Live Video might come to Android.

In 2024, Apple launched Emergency SOS Live Video, which lets an iPhone send a live video feed or photos to an emergency dispatcher when requested. Users cannot save the footage, but the dispatcher has the option to save it.

According to reports from Android Authority, the latest beta of Google Play Services includes lines of code referencing “Share live video” and “Emergency services will use your camera to view this emergency.” This suggests that Android users could soon have the option to share live video directly with emergency services, similar to Apple’s feature.

Google has not officially confirmed any details yet, and it is unclear whether this feature will be available for all Android devices or just Pixel phones.

Currently, Google does offer an emergency video feature for Pixel devices. Pixel owners can record videos up to 45 minutes long, which are then automatically shared with their list of emergency contacts via a link 15 seconds after recording ends. Contacts have one week to download the video. Unlike Apple, there is no option for direct live streaming to emergency services at present.

The new beta code suggests that Google is exploring live video streaming to address these limitations. Users will have to wait for official confirmation to see if this feature rolls out to all Android devices and when it might become available.
