The US Food and Drug Administration has approved Apple to launch a hypertension detection feature on selected Apple Watch models, the health regulator confirmed in a statement on Friday.
The announcement follows Apple’s September 9 event, where the company introduced its latest products, including a new blood pressure monitor in its smartwatch range and a slimmer iPhone Air.
According to Apple, the hypertension notification feature will be rolled out before the end of September on Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, as well as the premium Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 models. The feature will be available in 150 countries and regions, including the US and the European Union.
Using the optical heart sensor, the new tool analyses blood vessel responses to heartbeats. The algorithm works passively, monitoring data over 30-day periods, and alerts users if it detects consistent signs of high blood pressure.
Apple said the feature may not detect every case of hypertension but could benefit around one million users globally by providing early warnings.
Earlier reports suggested that Apple was preparing to introduce the feature in its smartwatches this month. Apple has not issued any official response to questions regarding the timeline of the rollout.
The FDA approval marks another step in Apple’s push to expand the health monitoring capabilities of its wearable devices, positioning the Apple Watch as a more comprehensive health and wellness tool.
