Google Enhances NotebookLM with New Interactive Learning Tools

Google has introduced a fresh set of interactive learning features for NotebookLM, aimed at making studying more engaging for high school and college students. The update includes new public notebooks, active learning functions, and expanded report options.

One of the key additions is Flashcards, which allow users to turn lecture notes, reports, or research papers into study aids. These flashcards can be used to memorise important dates, terms, or key concepts. Alongside this, a new Quizzes feature enables NotebookLM to generate AI-based tests from a user’s own sources. Quizzes can be customised, shared with others via a link, and adjusted for different themes or levels of difficulty.

To deepen understanding, users can click the ‘explain’ option on a flashcard or quiz to receive summaries or insights, including references to their uploaded materials.

NotebookLM’s Reports tool has also been upgraded. In addition to Study Guides and Briefing Docs, it now offers a Blog Post format. The platform can recommend report types depending on the theme, topic, or industry of the content uploaded. According to Google, “users can upload a draft of a short story and NotebookLM might suggest a character analysis or a detailed critique of the plot.”

Another major addition is the Learning Guide, a tutor-like function that asks open-ended questions, simplifies complex topics, and provides step-by-step support. This feature will be rolled out to all users starting next week.

Google has also introduced audio overviews that present opposing perspectives on subjects, especially useful for classroom debates and discussions. These formats are designed to provide learners with multiple viewpoints on the same material.

To expand study resources, Google has collaborated with OpenStax to provide free public notebooks on subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, AP Biology, Psychology, Introduction to Business, and Principles of Management. This comes after the earlier release of a collection of highlighted notebooks.

With these updates, NotebookLM aims to become a more interactive, supportive, and flexible tool for students and educators alike.
