India is fast becoming a global leader in medical technology, powered by innovation, strong government support, and rising domestic demand. Speaking at the 17th Global MedTech Summit in New Delhi, Amit Agrawal, Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, highlighted how India is positioning itself as a hub for affordable and high-quality healthcare solutions.
The summit, themed Innovating for a Healthier Future – Advancing MedTech for Global Impact: Make in India, Make for the World, brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators to discuss the sector’s future.
Agrawal noted that India’s large population and rapidly growing economy are fuelling double-digit demand for healthcare solutions. He stressed that the industry must remain patient-focused, ensuring devices are both cost-effective and of global quality standards.
Breakthroughs since COVID-19
Agrawal pointed out that India has made remarkable progress in advanced medical manufacturing since the pandemic. The country is now producing MRI and CT scan machines, mammography units, ventilators, stents, heart valves, dialysis machines, and a wide range of implants. “Products that seemed out of reach a decade ago are now being manufactured in India, proving the strength of our innovation ecosystem,” he said.
Policy Boost for MedTech
Government initiatives are playing a vital role in strengthening the industry. Three new medical device parks are set to be operational within a year. The Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Medical Devices is also underway, along with the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma MedTech Scheme, which has an allocation of ₹5,000 crore. These measures aim to enhance competitiveness, expand local value chains, and support R&D-driven growth.
India on the Global Stage
Agrawal emphasised that countries across the world now see India not just as a large market but as a leader in MedTech innovation. He called for stronger collaboration between government and industry to accelerate the commercialisation of new technologies.
With ongoing reforms and international trade agreements, India’s MedTech sector is expected to create millions of jobs, increase export strength, and deliver affordable, high-quality healthcare to global markets.
