Optiemus Infracom has announced plans to invest more than Rs 800 crore to establish large-scale tempered glass manufacturing in India. The move is expected to generate over 4,500 jobs in the coming years and strengthen the country’s position in the global electronics market. The company has unveiled India’s first tempered glass facility built with Corning technology in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant milestone for the domestic electronics ecosystem.
The plant was inaugurated on Saturday by the Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Information and Broadcasting, and Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw. He highlighted the sector’s rapid growth, stating that India’s electronics industry has expanded six times in the past 11 years, reaching nearly Rs 11.5 lakh crore in production and Rs 3.5 lakh crore in exports.
“Step by step, we plan to manufacture every component used in mobile devices right here in India,” Vaishnaw said, while also noting that the country would soon witness “made in India” chips.
In the first phase of operations, Optiemus has invested Rs 70 crore, creating a production capacity of 25 million units annually and generating 600 direct jobs. In the second phase, the company will expand its capacity to 200 million units a year, supported by an additional Rs 800 crore investment.
The domestic market for smartphone tempered glass is currently worth around Rs 20,000 crore, with annual demand exceeding 500 million pieces. Globally, the segment is valued at over 60 billion dollars.
Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom, described the plant as a “landmark moment” for the Indian electronics industry. He said, “Despite being one of the world’s largest mobile markets, India has relied on imports for tempered glass. Our aspiration is that every Indian mobile user must use a Make in India tempered glass.”
Pankaj Mahindroo, Chairman of the India Cellular and Electronics Association, pointed out that tempered glass production is labour-intensive, offering a “tremendous opportunity” for India to strengthen MSMEs, boost exports, and create large-scale employment.
The new facility is equipped with advanced processes such as scribing, polishing, chemical tempering, coating, and lamination, ensuring BIS-certified, high-quality glass for both domestic and international markets.
