Westbridge Capital, a seven billion dollar global investment firm with a focus on public and private investments in India and the United States, has emerged as the front-runner to acquire a minority stake in Edelweiss Mutual Fund, led by Radhika Gupta, according to multiple industry sources speaking on condition of anonymity.
“The deal is in the final leg and Westbridge Capital, which has made multiple bets previously in the domestic financial services space, is the lead contender as of now,” said one source. Two others confirmed the same.
The exact size of the stake or deal value has not been disclosed, but one source added, “If discussions proceed between both parties, a deal could be signed shortly, maybe as early as this week or next week.”
Another source said, “The target has a good business, and this transaction is part of the normal course of evolution of the firm, which may explore a listing in two to three years. Investment bank Nomura is acting as the sell-side advisor.”
Three years ago, ChrysCapital and GIC had invested in IDFC Mutual Fund through a 4,500 crore rupee buyout as part of a consortium led by a strategic player. In 2021, Blackstone acquired the asset management and wealth management business of ASK Group.
Meanwhile, the share price of Edelweiss Financial Services has declined nearly sixteen per cent over the past month. Earlier, Radhika Gupta had said, “To further strengthen our international business, we are open to exploring opportunities with minority strategic partners, ensuring there is a strong alignment in values and vision.”
As of 31 July 2025, Edelweiss Mutual Fund had assets under management of one lakh fifty-two thousand crore rupees, with over twenty lakh investors and fifteen thousand active partners across forty-eight locations.
Westbridge Capital has previously invested in HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, AU Small Finance Bank, Yes Bank, and Star Health Insurance, as well as in platforms like FundsIndia, Finvu, Propelld, Vyapaar, and Credgenics.
It has also entered a joint venture with Neelesh Garg to set up Kiwi General Insurance and invested in companies such as Meesho, Physicswallah, Third Wave Coffee, Vini Cosmetics, Just Dial, and Naukri.com.
According to its LinkedIn page, Westbridge Capital partners with transformative entrepreneurs in India and the US across all stages, providing long-term capital, hands-on support, and a strong global network.
