IIT Madras Develops India’s First Silicon Photonics-Based Quantum Random Number Generator

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has created and licensed the country’s first silicon photonics-based high-speed Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG). The technology has been licensed to Indrarka Quantum Technologies Pvt Ltd in a ₹1 crore agreement for commercial deployment, marking a key step in advancing indigenous solutions for secure technologies.

Sharing his views on the development, Professor Kamakoti Veezhinathan, Ph.D., Director of IIT Madras, said, “Silicon photonics is an emerging area with strong interface with Quantum Technologies. Random number generation is a critical building block for secure computing and communication. I am extremely excited that the CPPICS has developed this QRNG that could be readily deployed in the market.”

The QRNG has already been tested by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and deployed at the Society for Electronic Transactions and Security (SETS) in Chennai. It offers wide-ranging applications across IT security, defence, cryptography, blockchain, financial systems, one-time password generation, and gaming.

Calling the innovation a boost for the Make in India initiative, Dinanath Soni, Executive Director of Indrarka Quantum Technologies, said, “We are honoured to partner with IIT Madras in bringing India’s first Silicon Photonics-based QRNG to market. This ground-breaking technology represents a significant leap forward in quantum security solutions.”

At the launch, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, S Krishnan, IAS, described the achievement as “a pride for India.” Professors Manu Santhanam and Bijoy Krishna Das of IIT Madras highlighted the importance of strong collaborations between academia and industry in making this milestone possible. They emphasised that such partnerships further strengthen India’s leadership in quantum security technologies.

This breakthrough positions India at the forefront of secure quantum technology development, reinforcing the nation’s growing role in global technological innovation.
