A man from Bagdu Kalan in Jind district, Haryana, has lost ₹10.2 lakh after cybercriminals impersonated a close family member on Facebook, claiming to be in urgent need of money in London. Police have filed a case and begun an investigation.
According to the complaint lodged by the victim, Bajrang, the fraud began on July 7 when he received a Facebook message from an account appearing to belong to his wife’s maternal aunt’s son. The sender claimed he was stuck in London after a dispute that had left him hospitalised and said he urgently needed ₹12 lakh for treatment and related expenses.
To make the request seem genuine, the impersonator sent forged bank transfer slips showing amounts of ₹17 lakh and ₹9 lakh, saying these funds were pending clearance and would reach Bajrang’s account within two days. He also advised Bajrang to borrow money on interest if necessary to arrange the required amount quickly.
Believing the story, Bajrang made multiple transfers between July 7 and July 10, totalling ₹10.2 lakh. The scam came to light when the fraudster demanded additional money. Suspicious, Bajrang contacted his wife’s maternal uncle, only to learn that the relative was safe and well. Realising he had been deceived, he immediately reported the matter to the Cyber Crime Police Station in Jind.
Authorities have registered a case under sections related to cheating and impersonation and are working to trace the accused. Police have urged the public to always confirm emergency financial requests directly with the person concerned, especially if such appeals come through social media.
This incident adds to the rising number of cyber fraud cases in Haryana, where scammers exploit emotional appeals to pressure victims into transferring large sums. Officials emphasise the importance of independent verification and public awareness to prevent such crimes.
