Fraudsters Impersonating TRAI Officers Target Rajasthan Residents With Fake Mobile Tower Deals

Cyber criminals in Rajasthan are running a new scam by misusing the name of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)  to cheat residents. They pose as TRAI officials, offering fake mobile tower installation deals, conducting false call-data checks in multi-storey buildings, and even threatening “digital arrest” to extort money.

Officials report that these fraudsters lure people with promises of high monthly rent for installing a tower on their property, then demand advance “registration” or “security” fees. To appear convincing, they produce forged approval letters and identification. Some victims have been pressured into paying under threats of SIM card deactivation or legal action.

In Sikar, Kaushal Kishore Maurya was contacted by individuals posing as company representatives. They promised him a large monthly rental for installing a tower and showed fake IDs. After sending him a form to fill out, they demanded ₹25,000 as a security deposit.

In Chittorgarh, Kanhiya Lal was targeted by two men claiming to be TRAI officers. They accused him of cheating someone over the phone and claimed to have traced his calls. Using AI-generated records, they fabricated message logs from his phone and produced a forged letter for SIM card deactivation. Fearing consequences, Lal transferred ₹50,000 to them.

TRAI has clarified that it never calls people to offer tower installations, nor does it ask for Aadhaar numbers, OTPs, or bank details. The authority urges citizens to verify suspicious communications through its official website or local office.

TRAI authorities have warned the public not to share personal or financial information with unknown callers, to avoid making payments to unverified accounts, and to report all suspicious calls, messages, or emails immediately to cybercrime portals or the nearest police station.
