NAAC Launches Fully Digital Accreditation System to Boost Higher Education Quality

In a major move to enhance the quality of higher education in India, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council has introduced a fully digital and simplified accreditation system for colleges and universities. This revamped process aims to make accreditation more accessible and transparent, replacing the old seven-scale rating system that has been in place for nearly 30 years.

The new system will notify institutions only if they have received accreditation, removing the fear of receiving a low grade, which had earlier discouraged many from applying. A senior education official said that this fear had kept hundreds of institutions from seeking accreditation in the past.

The official launch of the new system is expected to take place on July 29 during a grand event hosted by the Ministry of Education, marking the fifth anniversary of the National Education Policy 2020. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to make the announcement.

Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of the Executive Council of NAAC, said, “As on date, roughly 40 percent of the 1170 universities and less than 20 percent of the 50000 colleges in the country have been accredited. Our goal is to ensure that 90 to 95 percent of these institutions obtain accreditation.”

Accreditation is considered a quality assurance mark for education standards, which benefits students and assures parents of the value of the education provided.

Under the updated system, the accreditation period will be reduced from five years to three. The process will be entirely online, with no field visits required initially. This is expected to simplify the procedure and motivate more institutions to apply.

A new Maturity-Based Graded Accreditation system with five levels will also be introduced. Levels 1 and 2 are easier to achieve and fully online. Level 3 will combine online evaluation with field visits. Institutions that meet high standards can directly apply for higher levels. Levels 4 and 5 will have strict requirements and will be granted only to institutions offering education of international quality, according to Sahasrabudhe.
