Amazon deploys its 1 millionth robot

After 13 years of adding robots to its warehouses, Amazon has now reached a major milestone.

The tech giant announced on Monday that it has deployed its one millionth robot. This milestone robot was recently delivered to an Amazon fulfillment center in Japan.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Amazon may soon have as many robots as human workers across its massive network of warehouses. The report also revealed that 75% of the company’s global deliveries are now supported in some way by robots.

In May, Amazon introduced its latest robot model, called Vulcan. This robot has two arms — one for moving inventory and another equipped with a camera and suction cup to pick up items. Amazon says that the Vulcan robot can even “feel” the items it grabs, thanks to its advanced sense of touch.

Back in October 2024, Amazon shared plans for its “next-generation fulfillment centers.” These new warehouses are designed to operate with 10 times more robots than the company’s current facilities, while still employing human workers. The first of these advanced robotic centers opened shortly after in Shreveport, Louisiana, near the Texas border.

Amazon’s journey into robotics began in 2012 when it acquired Kiva Systems. Since then, the company has steadily expanded its use of robots to speed up operations and improve efficiency in its warehouses.

Alongside the one million robot milestone, Amazon has also announced the release of a new generative AI model called DeepFleet for its warehouse robots. This AI system is designed to help robots navigate inside warehouses more efficiently, boosting their overall speed by 10%, according to the company.

Amazon developed DeepFleet using Amazon SageMaker, its AI development platform within the AWS cloud. The AI model was trained using Amazon’s own warehouse and inventory data to improve its performance.

The company says reaching one million robots is not just about the numbers. Over the years, Amazon has continued to upgrade its robotic fleet, adding new features and models to make its operations smarter and more efficient.
