Amazon has announced two major milestones in its robotics and AI journey. The company has deployed its 1 millionth robot, marking a significant step in its position as the world’s largest manufacturer and operator of mobile robots. This milestone robot was recently installed at a fulfillment center in Japan and is now part of a global network spanning more than 300 facilities.
Alongside this, Amazon has introduced a new generative AI foundation model named DeepFleet, developed to enhance the efficiency of its robot fleet. DeepFleet acts like a smart traffic system for robots, coordinating their movement to reduce travel time by 10 percent. This improvement is aimed at making deliveries faster and more cost-effective for customers.
Built using extensive in-house data and tools like Amazon SageMaker, DeepFleet optimizes how robots move inventory, minimizes congestion, and increases overall speed and accuracy. It also helps the company store products closer to customers, further improving delivery times.
Over the past decade, Amazon’s robotics fleet has expanded from a single robot model in 2012 to a wide range of intelligent machines. These include Hercules, capable of lifting 1,250 pounds, Pegasus with precision package handling, and Proteus, the company’s first fully autonomous robot that operates safely around employees.
These robots support workers by taking on repetitive and physically demanding tasks. Since 2019, Amazon has helped upskill over 700,000 employees, offering technical training programs that prepare them for roles in maintenance, engineering, and system operations. The company’s advanced fulfillment center in Shreveport, Louisiana, which launched last year, now requires 30 percent more employees in tech-related roles.
Amazon manufactures its robots in the United States and works with local suppliers, creating a strong feedback loop between designers, engineers, and operations staff. The company highlights that its AI efforts are not just about innovation but solving real problems—reducing energy use, improving delivery speeds, and lowering costs.
Looking forward, Amazon aims to make DeepFleet even smarter by training it on more data, further improving efficiency and transforming the future of logistics and delivery.
