Chennai lost Rs. 218 crore in Financial cybercrimes

Chennai is seeing an increase in financial cybercrimes; between January and May 2025, locals lost an incredible Rs 218.5 crore to scammers.

Greater Chennai Police report that 4,357 cybercrime complaints were filed during this time frame, which is about 500 more than the 3,888 instances that were filed during the same time previous year.

After finishing the legal procedure, city police were able to refund Rs 10.45 crore to the victims and freeze Rs 48 crore from the stolen funds, despite the increasing number of instances. In contrast, just Rs 6.52 crore of the Rs 182 crore stolen over the same period in 2024 was recovered.

According to police, the Madras High Court’s July 2024 order, which made it clear that filing a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) is enough to start the process of reversing frozen cash, made this year’s better recovery feasible.

In response to this directive, Chennai Police have expedited the procedure to better aid victims. Officials emphasized that prompt reporting is still essential, though.

“The golden hour — the first few hours after the fraud — is crucial for freezing the stolen amount and improving the chances of recovery,” said an official statement.

In relation to financial cybercrimes, 59 persons have been detained so far this year; 42 of them are from Tamil Nadu, while the other 17 are from other states.

Online trading scams, digital arrest scams (in which con artists impersonate law enforcement), and phony part-time work offers are the most often reported forms of fraud. Victims have often lost several lakhs of rupees in these scams.

The Chennai Police have responded by stepping up their public awareness efforts, which are aimed at the general public, workers, and students. Workplace outreach, instructional seminars at institutions, and public service short films starring Tamil actors Ashok Selvan and Yogi Babu are some of the initiatives.

The public was urged by City Police Commissioner A. Arun to be alert and report any suspicious activity right away. Citizens can report financial scams by visiting the closest cybercrime police station, calling the hotline 1930, or filing a complaint online at www.cybercrime.gov.in.  “Timely action can make all the difference in catching the fraudsters and recovering your money,” the Commissioner said.
