Samsung Eyes Perplexity AI for Deep Integration: A Bold Move Away from Gemini

In a dramatic twist to the evolving world of smartphone intelligence, Samsung appears to be setting the stage for a major shakeup in its AI ecosystem. According to insider chatter, the tech giant is in advanced talks with US-based startup Perplexity AI to not only embed its cutting-edge assistant into future Galaxy devices but also make a strategic investment in the company’s growth.

If the discussions mature into a formal partnership, Samsung could integrate Perplexity across core platforms like the Samsung browser, Bixby voice assistant, and perhaps even the heart of its operating system. The transformation may begin this year, with a broader rollout aligned with the launch of the Galaxy S26 series in 2026.

This move would mark a significant pivot for Samsung, which until now has leaned heavily on Google’s Gemini to power its Galaxy AI features. By embracing Perplexity, Samsung could reduce its reliance on Google and chart a more independent AI path forward.

For Perplexity AI, this would be its biggest leap into mobile territory yet. Having already partnered with Motorola for its Razr 60 and Razr 60 Ultra models, a deal with Samsung would place its assistant at the fingertips of millions worldwide. Talks reportedly began earlier this year, with recent high-level meetings in South Korea accelerating progress.

Samsung’s investment arm, Samsung NEXT, has already backed the startup previously, and it is expected to take a leading role in Perplexity’s next funding round. But beyond funding and integration, sources say the two companies are even dreaming bigger — possibly co-developing an AI-first operating system and a centralised app that unifies various intelligent agents under one seamless experience.

Meanwhile, Apple has also taken notice. During testimony in an ongoing antitrust case, Apple’s Eddy Cue revealed that the company had been “impressed” by Perplexity’s technology and was exploring options to embed it in Siri, possibly replacing or complementing current AI systems.

As Samsung leans into Perplexity, questions arise about the fate of Google’s Gemini on Galaxy devices. While unlikely to be completely removed, Gemini may fade into the background as Perplexity takes center stage. Ironically, this news arrives just as Google itself explores bringing Gemini to iPhones.
