OnePlus Accelerates ‘Project Starlight’ in India, Eyes Global Markets with Local Power

In a bold leap towards deepening its roots in India, global tech brand OnePlus is amplifying its local manufacturing strategy under its ambitious initiative—Project Starlight. With a planned investment of ₹6,000 crore by 2027, this vision stretches beyond production floors—encompassing local research and development hubs, and an expanding retail footprint across the nation.

Pete Lau, the visionary founder of OnePlus, shared, “We are currently focused on strengthening as well as expanding our local manufacturing capabilities in India and for this, we are also tying up with partners who can meet the demands of the Indian market while also ensuring global standards. In the future, OnePlus may consider exporting products from India, depending on market demand and production capacity.”

India remains a pivotal market for the brand, and with global ambitions gaining pace, OnePlus is setting its sights on reinitiating smartphone exports from Indian soil. While limited exports to the U.S. commenced back in 2019, they were later put on pause. Now, backed by new strategic partnerships and a maturing supply ecosystem, the brand is gearing up for the next big leap.

As part of this ramp-up, OnePlus, owned by China’s Oppo, continues to manufacture smartphones through its Greater Noida facility. The company is also aligning with the Indian government’s ₹22,919 crore production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme—designed to fortify the domestic electronics components sector. With an eye on long-term scalability, OnePlus is working to onboard more local component suppliers to improve cost-efficiency and reduce dependency on global imports.

These developments gain extra significance amidst recent shifts in global trade policy. The U.S. recently suspended reciprocal tariffs for 90 days (excluding China), easing pressure on imports from countries like India. However, base tariffs remain at 10%, while China continues to face the stiffest import duty at 145%.

As geopolitical and economic dynamics evolve, OnePlus is using this moment to recalibrate its global strategy. It aims to transform India not just into a key consumption hub, but a strong export base delivering cutting-edge technology with global standards.
