New Leadership at Liverpool Council: Jason Breton Steps Into CEO Role With Vision and Heart

In a landmark move shaped by both destiny and determination, Jason Breton has been officially appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of Liverpool City Council.

Following a meticulous and extensive recruitment journey managed by a top-tier external advisor, Mayor Ned Mannoun confirmed the appointment through a unanimous vote by council members.

“I want to thank my fellow members of the selection panel for their hard work – Deputy Mayor Peter Harle and Councillors Sam Karnib, Dr Betty Green, Fiona Macnaught and Peter Ristevski,” said the Mayor.

With over 100 contenders for the position, this overwhelming interest is a nod to Liverpool’s rising reputation as a place where innovation meets impact. From humble beginnings on Nagle Street — one of the tougher parts of the city — Jason Breton’s story now unfolds at the helm of the very council that shaped him.

For the past year, Mr Breton has been serving as Acting CEO, bringing with him the discipline of a former Detective Chief Inspector and the insight of a seasoned executive. After leaving the NSW Police Force, he pursued a Master’s degree in risk management at UNSW and transitioned into senior roles in the private sector, including positions at Downer, Hitachi, and most recently as Acting CEO at Metro Trains Sydney.

In Council, he began as Director of Operations, where his leadership style, grounded in both empathy and excellence, earned him the respect of his colleagues and community alike.

“Council will be exploring diverse revenue streams, ensuring transparent financial reporting and involve community in budgeting priorities,” Mr Breton shared, mapping out an inclusive future for Liverpool.

He further added, “The Council needs to prioritise strategic urban planning that’s future-proof (smart cities, green space, transport), collaborate with state and federal bodies for funding and alignment and seek community consultation on major developments to reduce backlash.”

His appointment comes at a critical juncture — Liverpool is growing fast, culturally vibrant, politically intricate, and in the midst of transformative urban change. Mr Breton recognizes the weight of the role:

“Taking over as the CEO of Liverpool City Council in NSW is a huge responsibility — and not without its challenges. However I know my team well, they know me, and in the short term I will be concentrating on improving our front line operations, so that our residents get the level of service they deserve.”

As the new CEO, Mr Breton carries both a mandate and a mission: to steer Liverpool toward a future that’s smart, inclusive, and grounded in the needs of its people. His focus will remain firmly on practical progress — smarter services, transparent governance, and sustainable growth that echoes the voice of the community.
