The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Ravi Shankar as its Executive Director (ED) with immediate effect. With more than 30 years of experience at the central bank, Shankar will now oversee the Department of Statistics and Information Management, further strengthening the RBI’s leadership in data and policy management.
Before his elevation, Shankar was serving as the Adviser-in-Charge at the RBI. In his new role, he will be responsible for leading the Department of Statistics and Information Management, which plays a key role in supporting the central bank’s data, analytics, and information management functions.
This is the 2nd Executive Director-level appointment at the RBI in less than 2 months. In May, the central bank appointed Gunveer Singh as Executive Director, assigning him responsibility for the Department of Payment and Settlement Systems, effective May 18, 2026.
Over his 3-decade career at the RBI, Ravi Shankar has worked across several critical areas, including corporate and banking statistics, the government securities market, settlement systems, debt management, and institutional surveys. His extensive experience has contributed to the bank’s policy formulation and financial system management.
Shankar holds a Master’s degree in Statistics from Banaras Hindu University and a Diploma in Development Policy and Planning from the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi. He is also a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance.
The appointment reflects the RBI’s continued focus on strengthening its leadership team with experienced professionals to support its regulatory, statistical, and financial oversight responsibilities.
