India’s internet subscriber base climbs past 102 crore

India’s digital journey continues to gather pace as the total number of internet users reached 102.86 crore by the end of December 2025, according to the latest quarterly report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. The figure marks a rise from 101.78 crore recorded at the end of September 2025, reflecting steady quarterly growth and deeper digital penetration across metro cities, smaller towns, and rural regions.

Mobile internet remains the primary driver of this expansion. Out of the total subscriber base, 98.32 crore users access the internet through mobile devices, while 4.53 crore rely on wired broadband connections. Broadband users, defined as those using high-speed data services, have crossed the 100 crore mark, highlighting strong demand for faster connectivity and rising data consumption nationwide. The telecom sector also reported a significant increase in overall telephone connections, which grew from 122.89 crore in September 2025 to 130.61 crore in December 2025, registering a growth of 6.28% within a single quarter. Tele-density improved to 91.74%, up from 86.65% in the previous quarter. Wireless subscribers, including mobile and fixed wireless users, accounted for 125.87 crore of total connections.

Financial indicators showed improvement as well. Telecom operators reported total sector revenue of ₹1,02,475 crore during the December 2025 quarter. Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) increased from ₹190.99 to ₹194.57 per month. Industry observers attribute the rise to better network quality, expansion of 4G and 5G services, and higher adoption of data-focused plans. Increased internet access, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, has accelerated the use of digital services such as online education, digital payments, e-governance platforms, and telemedicine, while also creating opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

The broadcasting sector recorded notable growth as well. Data from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting shows that 920 private satellite television channels have been permitted in the country, including 335 pay-TV channels, with the rest operating as free-to-air. Experts say rising competition and sustained demand for high-speed data are driving telecom companies to invest heavily in infrastructure and technology upgrades. With further 5G rollout expected in the coming quarters, India’s digital ecosystem is entering a more mature phase, strengthening the foundation of the country’s digital economy.
