A silent but powerful transformation is underway within India’s Global Capability Centres (GCCs), reshaping how global energy companies operate and innovate. These centres are rapidly adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation and advanced analytics to strengthen global energy operations. From technology initiatives led by bp India to the development of digital twins for refineries and offshore platforms, Indian GCCs are driving a new wave of global energy-tech advancement.
India has become a preferred destination for energy-sector GCCs, with companies setting up advanced technology hubs focused on renewable energy, grid modernization and clean energy solutions. These centers have moved far beyond traditional “back-office” roles. They now lead core engineering functions and take ownership of critical business operations. The shift marks a strategic upgrade in how multinational energy firms use their India-based teams.
A major highlight of this transition is the use of digital twins and AI. Indian GCCs are building detailed digital replicas of physical assets such as offshore platforms and refineries. This enables global energy majors to simulate real-time operations, forecast maintenance requirements and optimize production from thousands of miles away. At the same time, with global renewable energy capacity projected to grow nearly 3 times by 2030, these centres are playing a key role in research and development for sustainable solutions. Their work supports parent companies in meeting regulatory demands and net-zero commitments.
India currently hosts over 1,600 GCCs, with the energy sector forming a significant and growing share. Leading companies such as bp, Shell, and ExxonMobil have established large hubs in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune to tap into India’s strong STEM talent base. The scope of work now includes specialized areas such as petrotech, petroleum engineering, turbine micro-siting and aerodynamic modeling—functions once handled only at global headquarters. By driving AI-led productivity and managing independent roadmaps, these GCCs are enhancing global competitiveness and operating with increasing strategic autonomy, positioning India as a vital innovation hub for the world’s largest energy firms.
