YouTube launches native VisionOS app for Apple Vision Pro users

A long-awaited update has arrived for mixed-reality users as a native YouTube app is now available on Apple’s VisionOS platform, bringing a more immersive viewing experience to Apple Vision Pro.

Google has officially launched a dedicated YouTube app for the Apple Vision Pro, nearly 2 years after the headset debuted in 2023. Until now, users had to rely on the web version of YouTube via Safari or third-party apps. The new app allows users to watch content on a theatre-like virtual screen and supports video playback of up to 8K.

The native YouTube app gives Apple Vision Pro users full access to YouTube’s video library directly within VisionOS. It supports standard videos, Shorts, and includes a spatial tab that offers 3D, 360-degree, and VR180 content. Users can also view subscriptions, playlists, watch history, and other account-related features inside the app.

YouTube confirmed that on the latest Vision Pro models powered by Apple’s M5 chip, the VisionOS app enables 8K video playback. According to the company, videos stay front and centre while the surrounding environment fades away, creating a more “lean-back” viewing experience.

The YouTube for VisionOS app has a download size of 180MB and is compatible with devices running VisionOS 26.0 and later.

Apple first introduced the Vision Pro at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2023. At launch, YouTube chose not to release a dedicated app and instead guided users to access the platform through Safari. This approach had limitations, including restricted connectivity and no offline download support, leading many users to depend on third-party solutions.

In October last year, Apple released an upgraded M5-powered version of the Vision Pro with improvements over the first-generation model. The headset carries a starting price of $3,499 (roughly Rs. 3.07 lakh) and is claimed to offer up to 3 hours of video playback on a single charge. Apple is also reported to be working on a more affordable Vision Pro model with reduced specifications, which could launch later this year.
