Adani Enterprises responds to US civil probe over alleged Iran-linked LPG imports

In a regulatory filing on Tuesday, Adani Enterprises Ltd confirmed that a US agency has sought information regarding alleged imports of petroleum products from Iran as part of a civil investigation into transactions involving sanctioned entities.

The company stated that it received an information request from the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on February 4. This followed voluntary discussions initiated after a June 2025 report by an international publication, which alleged that Adani-linked firms imported Iranian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) into India using shipping routes that may have been intended to bypass US sanctions.

“The company is voluntarily engaging and fully co-operating with OFAC and will supply the requested information,” Adani Enterprises said. It also clarified that the communication from the US authority “does not contain any findings of aberrations/non-compliances.”

The June report had claimed that US prosecutors were examining whether Adani group companies imported Iranian LPG through Mundra port in Gujarat. At the time, the conglomerate had responded, stating, “By policy, the Adani Group does not handle any cargo from Iran at any of our ports. This includes any shipments originating from Iran or any vessels operating under the Iranian flag.” It further added that the group “does not manage or facilitate any ships whose owners are Iranian. This policy is strictly adhered to across all our ports”.

The publication had also reported that certain tankers travelling between Mundra and the Persian Gulf showed patterns commonly associated with sanctions evasion. Iranian oil and related products are subject to sanctions over Tehran’s suspected nuclear programme. The Adani Group had described the report as “baseless and mischievous” and said it “categorically denies any deliberate engagement in sanctions evasion or trade involving Iranian-origin LPG”.

On Tuesday, Adani Enterprises said it had “proactively and voluntarily” initiated discussions with OFAC. The US agency indicated it is conducting a civil investigation into certain company transactions processed through US financial institutions that may have involved, directly or indirectly, Iran or sanctioned parties.

The company added that it stopped all LPG imports from June 2, 2025. LPG accounted for 1.46% of its revenue in FY24-25 and 0.5% of the Adani Group’s overall revenue in the same period. “Nonetheless, out of abundant caution and as part of its co-operation efforts, the company ceased all LPG imports with effect from 2nd June 2025,” it said.

The Adani Group has faced scrutiny since early 2023 after allegations by Hindenburg Research related to stock manipulation and accounting practices. The group denied those claims, which have not been proven in any court. Hindenburg Research has since shut down.
