Quietly rolled out earlier, OpenAI is now ready to speak publicly about ChatGPT Translate, its dedicated translation tool designed to make language access simpler and more focused. The company has formally introduced the feature as a standalone translation experience, positioning it as a clear alternative to Google Translate.
ChatGPT has supported translations for a long time, but ChatGPT Translate offers a separate space meant only for straightforward language conversion. It is built for users who want quick, clean translations without extra steps. OpenAI said, “ChatGPT has always been great at languages and can translate across 40+ languages with accuracy, tone, and cultural nuance. ChatGPT Translate highlights this capability, which we’re working to make even better.” The move makes it clear that translation is now a core and visible part of ChatGPT’s offerings.
The announcement also signals long-term plans. OpenAI’s focus on improving this capability suggests ChatGPT Translate is not a short experiment but a feature that will continue to evolve. While Google remains the dominant player, OpenAI is clearly aiming to compete by highlighting quality and AI-driven refinement.
Localisation is another major focus, especially for India. ChatGPT Translate currently supports 47 languages, while Google Translate supports 249. To improve performance in diverse regions, OpenAI revealed a new evaluation system. “We recently designed a new benchmark – IndQA – which helps us evaluate how AI systems perform across different languages and cultures in India. This is just one way we’re working to make our technology more accessible and useful for people around the world,” the company said.
ChatGPT Translate goes beyond direct word-for-word translation. Available on browsers across phones and desktops, the tool lets users adjust tone and style. Built-in fluency controls allow translations to sound more natural, formal, or simpler for children. These AI-driven refinements are a key difference from traditional translation tools.
While Google has scale and an early lead, OpenAI’s entry adds a new layer of competition. With its AI-first approach and growing focus on localisation, the translation space is set to become more dynamic in the days ahead.
