India’s homegrown digital payments platform recorded strong momentum in 2025, reflecting deeper adoption of UPI-based payments across both urban and semi-urban users.
Monthly transactions on the BHIM Payments App increased more than fourfold during calendar year 2025, rising to 165.1 million in December from 38.97 million in January, according to data released on Tuesday. The growth followed the launch of BHIM 3.0 and wider acceptance of digital payments across user segments.
Developed by NPCI BHIM Services Limited, the app posted an average month-on-month growth of around 14 per cent through the year. Transaction value processed on the platform reached ₹2,20,854 crore in December 2025, representing over 390 per cent growth in transaction volume and more than 120 per cent growth in value compared with the same period last year.
BHIM 3.0 was launched by the National Payments Corporation of India on 25 March 2025. The update introduced features such as Split Expenses, Family Mode, Spending Analytics, support for over 15 languages, and improved performance in low-internet areas to make digital payments more inclusive.
Delhi emerged as one of the leading markets for the app in 2025, driven by strong usage in small-ticket, high-frequency transactions. Peer-to-peer payments accounted for 28 per cent of total transactions in the city, followed by grocery purchases at 18 per cent, fast food outlets at 7 per cent, eating places and restaurants at 6 per cent, telecommunication services at 4 per cent, service stations at 3 per cent, and online marketplaces at 2 per cent.
Usage of the app for IPO mandates also increased during the year, supported by a simplified interface and stable authentication processes. Continued adoption for high-value transactions pointed to growing user confidence in the platform’s security and reliability.
“Digital payments have become an integral part of daily life, and the BHIM Payments App is designed to address everyday user requirements,” said Lalitha Nataraj, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NPCI BHIM Services Limited. She added that growth across northern markets such as Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan reflected rising trust in the app’s performance and user experience.
The company said the app supports more than 15 regional languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Haryanvi, and Marwari, and is optimised for low-connectivity environments to drive adoption in rural and semi-urban areas.
During 2025, new features such as UPI Circle Full Delegation, split payments, family expense management, spending analytics, UPI Lite auto top-up, forex booking, prepaid recharges, and assured rewards were added.
NPCI BHIM Services Limited was incorporated in 2024 as a wholly owned subsidiary of NPCI to expand digital payments adoption through the Bharat Interface for Money platform.
