OpenAI has officially confirmed that advertisements will soon appear on ChatGPT. The company announced that it will begin testing ads on the platform in the coming weeks. The initial rollout will be limited to users in the United States, with a wider expansion expected after the testing phase is complete.
In a post on X, the company said, “In the coming weeks, we plan to start testing ads in ChatGPT free and Go tiers.” OpenAI also shared a detailed blog post explaining how these ads will work and what users can expect.
According to the company, it has set four clear principles for ads on ChatGPT. First, responses generated by the chatbot will not be influenced by advertisements. Second, ads will always be shown separately from the main response and will be clearly labelled. Third, OpenAI said it will not share user conversations with advertisers. Finally, ads will not be shown to Plus, Pro, Enterprise, or Business subscribers.
OpenAI added that users will remain in control of their data. The company may use non conversational data to personalise ads, but users will have the option to turn this off and delete any data used for advertising at any time. It also stated that it will not design ChatGPT to push users to spend more time on the app just to increase ad views. A new paid tier that removes ads completely may also be introduced in the future.
The company said the ads will aim to be informative, engaging, and conversational. Small businesses may also get the option to create interactive AI based experiences within ChatGPT after users click on their ads.
Since the feature is still in testing, OpenAI noted that the format, visibility, and eligible user tiers could change before a full public rollout.
